lynthia: (with Jen)

This update will be somewhat brief, since I've got about a BILLION things to do today. But since I'll be away for the next week, it seemed like a good idea to make some kind of note of where I am in life.

As usual, where I am isn't quite as far along as my to-do list would like me to be. ;) I had really hoped to have [livejournal.com profile] branwynelf's daughter's dress finished today, but such was not to be. Well, I got the dress finished, but not the jacket that goes with it, or the lacing. It'll go quickly, next week.

I'm at work right now, but I hope not to be for too much longer. I haven't packed yet, I'm still in the middle of doing laundry, and it'd be nice to eat dinner, too. Fortunately, my boss can tell that today would be a bad day to hold me to eight hours.

Now, mind you, I did have a schedule that was going to allow me to work a full day today. And maybe not even be a complete basket case. Unfortunately, the universe didn't like my plan, and it decided to pick on my sister. Now that's just not fair.

I'd like to start by saying that Jen is a little too much like me, in some ways. She called me at lunchtime yesterday, and I was at work. So she didn't want to bother me, and asked me to call her when I was finished at work. Okay, sure. Little did I know that the thing she wanted to tell me was that she was in serious pain, and suffering from what she suspected (and rightly so) to be a kidney infection. See, now, this is not the sort of thing you put off dealing with for six hours. So by the time I called, she wasn't doing so well. I said I'd head to Berkeley right away to pick her up, and bring her back to the hospital she's familiar with, and she liked that plan. I called Charles, but he was working, and couldn't really get away with dropping everything to go with me. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] shofixti could, and did. So we headed to Berkeley. About halfway there, I got a call from my mother that Jen's boss had noticed that she was in so much pain she was panting, and took her to the local hospital. So we headed there instead (after getting some really lame directions from the people who work at the front desk of the International House), and found her in the emergency room. She was already on antibiotics and painkillers by then, so it wasn't so bad. [livejournal.com profile] shofixti and I sat with her there while awaiting the results of her tests to see if they were going to keep her overnight, or let her go. She was in no pain, and feeling kinda loopy I think, so we both had a pretty easy time of making her laugh. She was on a bed against the wall in the hallway (the ER was pretty busy), so we couldn't move around much, but it wasn't horrible. At around 11 pm, they decided to go ahead and let Jen go, so we got her prescriptions and paperwork all figured out, and left.

Now the fun begins: getting her prescriptions filled. We found the Walgreens where fun was outlawed to have this taken care of, and discovered that they wanted us to wait until 1:30 am to pick them up. Um, no. Jen was tired, I was tired, and 2 1/2 hours for her painkiller seemed like a bad plan. So I hovered until they filled them faster, and I think it only took around half an hour. Better. And we entertained ourselves by making fun of the pharmacists who had absolutely no senses of humor whatsoever.

So, dropped Jen off, finally got dinner, and went home. Hit bed around 2:30am. No packing done, no sewing done, no laundry done. Sort of started off today as the biggest stress-puppy in the world. I'm getting better, though, as I slowly catch up to myself.

Um, yes. Putting off dealing with a kidney infection for six hours is a good way to end up with renal damage or failure, and on dialysis.

I won’t lie and say that after reading that I didn’t feel a little knotted up inside. I know I don’t see Jen very much but I like to think her and I are still good friends. The last thing I want to do is sound over protective but I really hope she gets better.

Please give her my best.

I don't blame you a bit for worrying about her. Believe me, I do too! But for now, it looks like she's doing okay. She goes back in for a check-up in a couple of days, but initial test results are showing no damage done to her kidneys. A little dose of antibiotic, and she'll be good as new.

Hopefully, she learned something with this. You know Jen, though: she likes to push her luck with her health!
